"The most basic that Greece has to offer"

Overall Hotel Rating:

Poor

Open quote

Elena Pool was advertised by easyjet holidays as a 3 star which is absolutely incorrect. While I understand that Greece is basic, having been there many times before, this is without doubt well below average. Sheets and towels were unchanged for 10 days, there is no entertainment whatsoever, not even a little music around the pool and it is more akin to Fawlty Towers than any other hotel I've stayed in. The owners say "please" and "thank you" and that is where the pleasantries end. They made numerous errors with guest arrivals (thankfully not ours) and at one point there was a loud row in reception. George, the owner, speaks better English than you may be led to believe. Air con is 5 euros a night and our room (18) dripped constantly and needed a saucepan placed underneath and one of our precious towels to stop the splashes. It is not particulary powerful and one of the rooms on the ground floor, poolside, has no air con at all which would be unbearable at the end of July/beginning of August. I'm under no illusion that eventually this hotel is likely to close as they seem clueless in their attempts to run a business. It is in desperate need of a refurbishment but they appear to have no intention of doing anything to address this. One of the only positives: the pool is very nice.

The town is pleasant, the restaurants lovely for the main part. The Balcony, Stamatis and Oceano are by far the best. Very much on the downside, the ONE ATM is always broken - take cash or be prepared to be poor. The restaurant and bar owners will freely admit that this is destroying the business of those that work with cash only and the area is suffering greatly as a result. If you run out of money you will need to get a bus or hire a quad to take you to the town of Maratika. In addition, strikes in Greece have caused issues with bin collections and they remained unemptied on the streets for days on end. There are also a large number of half finished and abandoned buildings, moreso than in other Greek towns and villages. While some may say that St Georges is an example of unspoilt Greece, I can't help but think these three issue in particular were examples of a failing tourist industry and quite sad to see.

Although these apartments are advertised as 3* i wouldn't even class them as a 1*. My husband and i have just returned from a weeks holiday and was only thankful that we didn't ave to stay for 2 weeks. The apartments were dirty in particular the bathroom. There was no towel or bedding changes all week and the towels provided were hand towels. The food was poor and not to be recommended. Although the beach is advertised as 400m away this is also not the case and takes at least 20 minutes to get there.

Lovely resort if you like a peaceful holiday. You must visit the Balcony, food great and you get a very warm welcome and nothing is too much trouble for them, also greek dancing thrown in.
The Elena Studios are very basic, if you stay in the annexe be prepared for a very tight fit in the bathroom. I have been all over Greece and never had a hand towel for the shower before also bedding and towels not changed at all. Bin in bathroom only emptied once!

The pool was very clean and lovely gardens which did compensate for the room a little but would not book this accommodation again.

The Eleana studios' public areas are very nice;good pool and bar area, but the rooms are quite simply the worst I've ever stayed in. Dirty, badly in need of refurbishment and, in one case, very damp. The brochure said there was a Tv in the room too and there wasn't. The owners were very friendly and helpful until I requested to move rooms and then became the opposite. The rep was no help either so I elected to move to somewhere else and pay for it myself. I found a lovely apartment overlooking the sea for 20 euros a night and enjoyed the rest of my holiday.

The resort is extremely quiet. i was frequently the only occupant of a restaurant or bar, so don't go there if you're expecting a wild nightlife. The restaurants I ate in were all fine. I particularly liked the one called Makis and the hilraiously named 'Spiros on the beach' was quite entertaining. The beach was good. No problem finding a quiet spot and the walk to Lake Korission although quite a trek through the sand dunes was worth a go. Agios georgios South is a good destination for those wanting a quiet relaxing holiday but I definitely would not book at the Eleana.

One other thing to bear in mind is the terrible palava at Corfu airport coming home. We were made to stand outside for 2 hours before we could check in. There was no orderly queuing system and as I didn't push and shove to get in as did a lot of others I nearly missed the flight. I certainly wouldn't recommend this to people travelling with small children.

We booked at the Eleana apartments in June of this year, and must admit to reading some terrible reviews and being a little apprehensive. However, on arriving at the apartments, we were very pleasantly surprised!!

There was a brand new fridge and two ring cooker (we never used it though), and a kettle, ample space for the extra bed in the living area, and two spacious bedrooms! The bathroom was clean and the shower was huge with a curtain (another unusual occurance in Greece)....there was a rather smelly drain in the bathroom floor, but that's Greek plumbing for you.....a bit of extra air freshener and we didn't notice it too much. Someone had complained about having no bath towels..........wakey wakey....this is GREECE!!! They are NEVER provided in self catering apartments.

Towels and sheets were changed regularly, and the maid was in every day, unless you were having a lie in, although she turfed us out one day to mop the floor when we were just milling about getting ready to go out. The bin in the bathroom was emptied every day as was the one in the kitchen area, and the floor was swept/mopped every day too. The only thing I would say is, watch the floors, patios and the steps, as they are marble, which gets really slippery when it's just been mopped.

The pool was spotless, and although Toby and I didn't eat in the bar, my mum and youngest son had lunch one day, and said the food was fine albeit a bit basic. There was a barbeque night on Wednesdays, but you had to book. We didn't go to it though. The gardens were well tended and very pretty.

Eleana and her husband George were quite friendly, and helpful, although their English is not that good. Debbie, the Olympic rep was great too!! Always up for a laugh, not pushy and told us where to get the best deals. She got things sorted when my mum fell off her quad bike and broke a rib(aged 75).

We were so happy with it that we're about to book to go back to Eleana next year, and if that's not a recommendation, I don't know what is!!!

St George is a great resort for families, with plenty to do, a mulitude of places to eat, depending on how lively you want to be. It's fairly central unless you want to go 'up North' and has a good range of car hire and scooter/quadbike hire places (we used George's both times for cars and bikes)so you can explore further. There are the Costas boat trips which go from the small jetty. Well worth it, we saw dolphins on the way back from Paxos!!!

You can get a free safety deposit box at the tourist office in the middle of town, and Gorgios and Takis are a great help with money changing and helping organise trips. There is a cash machine just a bit further along from the tourist office.

All in all a brilliant 2nd holiday in St George, and we are all really looking forward to the 3rd.

What a great holiday would recommend these appartments to anyone, the owners and staff where very friendly.

The studio we had was not refurbish but it had electric kettle, air con., at 5euros a day,a shower curtain and tray and was big enough for the two of us. The rep was very friendly and did not push you in to going on trips and was always up for a laugh, on BBQ night she ended up in the pool. The pool and gardens were kept very clean and the pool was never over crowded [except once when a load of Germans turnt up] and it was big enough to have a good swim in.

The first week we were there there were two families wth children and they had both been before and said that the children felt comfortable and safe in the resort. Second wek there were only couples but thanks to the Bolton crowd we had a geat time.

The resort is quiet, the beaches are sandy, plenty of places to eat and serveral bars that stay open into the morning[we ended up most nights at Mad Mikes]. To explore the island we hired a quad bike from Geogres, I was a bit dubious at first as I am a non-driver,[after the first half hour I wondered why], we got as far as Corfu town but know one told us that the shops do not open on a Sunday, we wondered around and came across the Jewish quarter which had pleanty of shops and pavement cafes.

The only down side to the resort is that apart from the beach, pool and one internet cafe there is very little for older children espically in the evenings.

I would definately goback to Elleans again.

The studio was small dark and very dirty, even the bed linen was dirty. The glass light shade that hung above the bed was smashed, the knife and forks and other kitchen utensils were dirty, the shower was always freezing cold, the shower curtain was full of mold, you had to climb over the toilet to get into the shower and the bathroom flooded everytime we got a shower. Ive been to greece befor and expect to have basic accomodation but basic doesnt mean dirty this place was a mess and in desperate need of refurbishment.

The pool was also dirty and also in need of refurbishment the paint on the pool floor and sides was coming away and we never saw the pool being cleaned in the two weeks that we stayed. As for the pool bar it was over priced and also dirty we only had one drink there in the two weeks and we never went in the pool, we went to a lovely hotel down the road to sunbath eat and swim. We only used the eleana as somewhere to sleep.

The brochure says that there is a Weekly BBQ and that the accommodation has Safety deposit boxes, Money exchange and a Courtesy room we saw none of these. The staff were very Miserable unhelpful and very unwelcoming.

On the first day of our stay I repoted the place to the holiday rep ho didnt seem to have much time to help she said that she would move us in a few days whan she had some where for us and gave us a form to fill in but we heard no more from her and never got moved. we tried again to contact her and were unsuccessful.
however it was our honeymoon so we werent going to let this spoil things for us and we enjoied the rest of our time in thr resort and spent very litlle time at the eleana and lots of time at other hotel pools and the beach. There are two beaches one at each side of the resort. one is much nicer than the other but both are nice. the sea was clear and clean and we spent many hours Snorkelling and looking at the many fish.

The resort is quiet but there are many resturants and bars to try out and we never once had a bad meal. Food and drink are quite cheap and meals are very good value for money. The resturants over looking the sea front are a must to watch the sun setting into the sea. it was very romantic.

The brochure says that the resort is a 5 min walk well i disagree it is more! it is also down quite a dark main road so at times it was rather scarry.
The resort is lovely ideal for famlies and couples but the eleana is a definate NO, and as for olympic never again will i travel with this holiday company.

Even though we went with Golden sun and in fact were in the resort when they went into liquidation We had no complaints. The apartments were basic but fine, clean and well maintained. The resort was FANTASTIC,if your young it could be considered to quiet but there more than enough bars (lively and quiet)and we could not complain about any meals we ate, the one restaurant that was better than any of the others was the Ananias teverna (hotel) superb. Throughout the resort beer cost about £1.70 a pint and a meal for 2 was approx £18 including drink (sometimes cheaper).

We hired a quad bike(A MUST)from Mexas for £100, this was for a weeks hire and it was the best way to see most of Corfu,(from Kavos, which is an experience, to Paleokastritsa). Although getting up some of the mountains was sometimes a matter of prayer (next time it will be a moped).

The beaches were magnificent and went on for miles. Although beware, the quieter parts had some nude sun bathers (I did not know where to look!!).

We tried most of the bars, all great, but enjoyed the friendly staff and music in the easy buzy bar.

I cannot begin to tell you how much I worried about the holiday after reading some of the reviews, but I can honestly say we had a fantastic holiday and this included the apartments. For the amount that we paid for the holiday I could not understand the things that people complained about. (Not having two pillow cases, the swimming pool having a dead insect in it) can you belive it!!

Some of the Golden sun staff stayed on to sort out the problems (without pay) and were great. Although we had not heard of the airline (exelair) they were great (plenty of leg room).

I would not hesitate to not only go back to St.George but would also stay at the same apartments. My only complaint if you can call it that was that, I would have second thoughts about going in September as the weather is very changeable. BE WARNED WHEN IT RAINS IT RAINS!!.

We read the reviews on Helena Apts before we went and were therefore a little sceptical as what to expect. However we found that although the apartment was basic, it was clean and had everything we needed for a one week's stay (apart from towels!). Make sure you don't make the same mistake we did - Golden Sun holidays only provide you with one hand towel each, the bath towels you have to bring yourself.

The resort was nice and quiet, with good beaches. For us though, it was a little too quiet as we had hoped there would be a couple of lively-ish bars to keep us entertained, but the busiest bar we found only had around 20 people in there!

The food in St George was very nice and we would highly recommend ";Demitri's"; for the tzatziki and the ";Balcony"; for good Greek and English cheap grub.

The only warning we would make is do not book car hire or excursions through Golden Sun. We booked a jeep for one day for 65 Euros, but the next day we found the exact jeep for hire in the centre of St George for just 40 Euros.

We booked 2 excursions through Golden Sun, the day at the waterpark (30 Euros each)and the Paxos/Antipaxos boat trip (23 Euros each). First was the boat trip, which we got to 10 minutes early only to find that the boat was already full (like sardines!) and so we had to stay squeezed inside the whole journey to our first stop. After the first stop we got on the boat early to make sure we got a seat outside, only to have engine problems for over half an hour before setting off to our second stop. On the way to our second stop, a lady passed out from the heat (she couldn't escape it as the boat was too overcrowded). On working out the life jackets:passengers ratio it was clear that if the boat sank, so would would over half the passengers! Then on leaving the second stop, we were told our journey was going to be cut short by two hours and we would have to miss our third stop because of engine problems - so we were then stuck inside again for the 1 1/2 hour journey back to St George! We had a great time at the waterpark but the coach was 35 minutes late picking us up in the morning and an hour late collecting us from the waterpark. The rep made one phonecall and then hid from the annoyed crowd without telling us what was going on!

We did have a nice time apart from the excursions and if we could go again with a more reputable company, then we probably would (with lots of mosquito repellant!).

all i can say is please do NOT stay at the HELENA APARTMENTS. Where do i start?
- broken toilet that was stinking of excrement
- no cold water
- grotty tiling and grate on bathroom floor green and manky
- on arrival, mosquito's all over the apartment
- ripped sheets, stained sheets.
basically the list will go on and on, you would'nt let your dog stay there!!!!
i have cut this holiday short and after £400 and two flights later i am home 4 days early!
i have travelled twice to greece and although apartments are very basic, this place was unbearable!!!!
just dont have the experience that me and my partner have had....
if you could see the photos we have taken you wouldn't go, BELEIVE ME!!! i am gutted....

the resort itself is o.k, there are really good places to eat and the night life was good....

good half an hour walk to the beach but on arrival it was good...

if you do go to St george RESORT you will probably have a good time but dont dont dont stay at these apartments.
I am seeking full compensation for all costs.. your probably wandering why i came home and why didn't e asked to be moved but there were two other couples who ahd already asked and they were'nt going anywhere!!!!

just beware!!!!

Glad that we had read the reviews on here prior to going as we went prepared for the basic accommodation by taking our own Bath towels etc.

The apartments are very basic but clean and of a similar standard to those we have stayed in previously, the owners wife is very friendly and works hard to keep the rooms up to their basic standards without any additional help.It is true however that the owner can appear grumpy when serving in the bar but smiles more if you keep spending. Not as bad as the reviews we have read previously and we had a pleasant and enjoyable stay.

Highly recommend the hire of a quad bike, we enjoyed a lovely day out driving through the hills and seeing unspoilt greek villages, stopping in a fishing village for sea food lunch(fresh fish)is a must.Lots of very good restaurants in the resort itself and would highly recommend Le Bistrot for excellent food and very friendly service.Flights were excellent with Excel airways on time both ways.

We would rate this one of our favourite places to visit and will return in the future but maybe find accomodation a bit closer to the magnificent sandy beach. Happy Holiday.

We got a late deal through teletext holidays for 7 nights at St George South. We read the reviews on this site and from these, we assumed it would be OK, but nothing special.

My partner and I have been to Corfu once before (Sidari), to Cyprus and to Rhodes.

Helena Apartments

We stayed in a self-catering apartment, with two twin beds.

On arrival at the Helena Apartments, a friendly lady, who actually owns and manages the apartments, greeted us. The apartments were very basic, even by Greek standards, but the sheets were clean and the pillow had substance. (We have had pillows in the past that may as well have been a sheet!)

We were a bit concerned when a sign states ";2 Euros per day charge for sun beds."; Don't worry; provided you buy a glass of water every day, no one bothers you. At 30 degrees, you will buy at least one ice cream a day from there.

The swimming pool was excellent. It is very deep for a 20m pool (goes from 1m to 3m deep) and was also well kept.

We, despite reports of poor food on this site, gave a breakfast a go. It was passable, however it did feel like the bread was deep fried, which was a bit wrong. It was OK value at 4 Euros for 2 eggs on 2 toast and orange juice.

On the whole, the accommodation was fine as a base, but do not expect a lot, not that you should with any Greek resort anyway.

St George South resort

The apartment is approx 10 minutes walk from the main resort and all of the roads in the resort are flat. This was a great result, after being 20 minutes out of town on an undulating road in Rhodes!

There are local supermarkets/shops within 5 minutes walk, that house of the required basics such as water; mossy repellent etc the main strip is either side of a main T-junction. To the right is where most of the restaurants and bars are.

There are two beaches, Golden Sands that is the 'better' beach, but it is a 15-20 minute walk form the main resort to the left of the T-junction, which is 25-30 minutes from the apartments! We spent our days at the beach to the right of the t-junction, a further 5 minutes walk.

It does get very blowy at the beach, which is great for keeping you cool in 30 degrees +, but if you feel the cold, take a cardigan just in case. 2 x sun bed and a parasol was only 5 euros per day which is pretty good value.

Eating Out

We can honestly say we did not have a bad meal in the resort itself and the quality of meat, whether it be chicken or beef, was phenomenal. You really will not go wrong with food here.

Breakfast

If you like an English breakfast, look no further than Sunset, which is half way down the main resort, and just past the Oh la La music bar. For 5 Euros you can have a standard English which is real English sausage x 2, egg, bacon, mushrooms, tomato and a cup of tea/coffee or orange juice.

If you have had a heavy one, a Jumbo breakfast has the above + extra sausage, extra egg and 2 x hash brown (which were not at all greasy and are probably the best has browns in the world)

The Bistrot

If you like classy, modern looking eateries, you MUST NOT miss the Bistrot. This restaurant is 20 yards left of the t-junction on the opposite side of the road.

The setting is fantastic, right on the sea and the décor is excellent. Food ranges from freshly cooked sea bream to mixed kebab and fillet steak. There is also veg menu. For dessert, you must also try the chocolate mousse, which is prepared by their Belgian chef (out of this world, we had it 3 times in 7 nights!)

The staff are exceptional, in particular Becky (call her Boo!) and Stephanie. Even the house wine was excellent and at 7 Euros for a litre, you really cannot fault it

For 2 people having main course and a dessert, plus 1 litre of house wine and a bottle of water, total cost was c37 Euros, which is really good value, particularly for the setting and décor.

DO NOT MISS IT!

Panaramoic

Average for 2 people based on the above is c 30-35 Euros. Food again is excellent, with Mexican Chicken and Chicken A La Crème being particular favourites.

Panaromic is opposite the local Golden Sun tourist office.

As we wanted a chilled week, we did not hire a car, but the most popular way of getting about appeared to be on quad bike, which was pretty cool. On the whole, we had an awesome holiday and would go back to this resort again, without any problems.

On arrival at the apratments the outside loks just as it does in the brochure, nice swimming pool, sun beds, pool snack bar etc.

Very disappointed with the standard of the inside of the apartments. I understand it is of a basic standard and have travelled to quite a few Greek islands, but this was not good enough. It was scruffy and tatty and old, tiling in kitchen arreas was chipped and loose and had just been painted over. We had a rusty old fridge, one chipped tea cup and one mug for the four of us to share for drinking out of ! The electrics blew when we arrived, the cooker hood had bare wires hanging out of the wall and we asked the owner how we plugged in the cooker rings and he stuck them in the socket with the bare wires from the cooker hood !

We had two bathrooms which were extremely meagre, manky old tiles with mildew on the shower tray, both toilets were leaking and had eclectricians tape wrapped round the pipes.

The towels we were issued for using for showering were about the size of a small hand towel, old faded blue towels with bleach marks all over them.( I have thrown better ones away )

Very disappointed considering we booked this holiday 8 months ago from the Golden Sun Brochure.

The resort itself is ok, quite small and spaced out so you must like walking or hire a car. If you have young children like us, safer with a car as there are very few pavements and yiou are walking along main roads with traffic.

I think maybew Gold sun should show a picture of the inside of the apartments in the brochure, or at least give a revdiw in the gazateer so that if you go into a travel agents you can read the true write up on the place.
