We flew Virgin to San Francisco, excellent flight. Stayed at Nob Hill Motor Inn for 3 nights.

Brilliant location, we had the two family suites they had. They were huge! Our room had a 6ft bed, small kitchen area with coffee, microwave, fridge, tv and seating area. The kids had a separate room two double beds. Even the normal rooms were a good size. Comfortable walk down to Fisherman's Wharf, easy to get the bus back. This place was such a find, really reasonable rates [we paid £112 per night for 4 of us!]. owners really helpful and friendly. Free parking which is a major bonus. Free coffee/chocolate and cakes/croissants for breakfast. Quiet. We booked direct with them by phone. If you look in tripadvisor you can get details and photos.

Went to Alcatraz which was great. Last went there 17 years ago, it hasn't changed which is good, except we had a guide and now you get a audio guide which is much better as you can go at your own pace. Word of advice, book before you go or you will be disappointed. You can book on line up to 3 months' ahead. We did and when we got to the ticket office the first available trip was 3 days away! [unless you are happy to queue for no-shows]. We got the first trip at 9.30am, so it's not busy. The site for booking is www blueandgoldfleet com. Other sites force you to take trips which include having to visit other areas. Went to Muir woods, worth a look, especially as you just have to cross the golden gate bridge and that takes you there and the best views for the bridge are on that side. Did Fisherman's Wharf, commercial but lovely atmosphere and great stalls with seafood.

Drove down the Pacific Coast Highway to Dana Point in Orange County, about an hour past LA. Stayed there for 10 days, using it as a base to visit LA, San Diego, Mexico. Then ended up in Vegas for 5 days. Stayed at Flamingo. Great Value $70 a night for 4 of us in a room. Good sized room, we asked for a high floor and got one. Did Grand Canyon by plane and helecopter which took us down to the river for a short boat trip. Expensive but well worth it. Vegas is hard to describe. The buildings are just unbelievable. Only in America! Be prepared for constant noise and long walks. The big hotels are designed so that you have to go through each one to get to the next and they just go on forever! Cabs are the best way of getting around, forget the monorail you have the same problem in that its a long long walk once you get out to get anywhere.
The type of place [unless you are a serious gambler] that you visit just once!
